JKISSI : With the new year approaching rapidly it was only necessary to cap off the year, and the future of Street Etiquette, in a grand way. As many of you are aware, Street Etiquette teamed up with Photographer/Videographer TONE to conduct a brief video interview with us. Travis and myself sought out to invite some of our closest friends, those that we felt embodied our definition of ‘style’, to be part of the video (this was not only relying on the physical element of style, but the integrity and character of all those individuals that influenced us in some way or another). We pitched the original plan and rundown to TONE; what ended up taking place would be considered one of the most inspirational moments of our lives. The photographer for the project was Alejandro Perez a good friend of ours who’s photography speaks for itself, it was great working with someone who is on the same wave length.

What I most admire about the video is that he gives his definition of style effortlessly, as if we rehearsed previously. The internet is one of the most powerful engines ever created giving us the ability to link to individuals all around the world simply because we posses something in relation. The fact that in the early stages large companies chose to ignore the might and impressionable power of the web displays why many of them are now looking for ways to get inside a loop that, at this point, is almost closed.

Genesis of Style - Genesis – ’a coming into being’ or ‘the beginning of’ and when you think of it in relation to style – ’a way of expressing something that is characteristic of a particular group or period of time’. This “genesis”, so to speak, is not about convincing different individuals to dress similar to us; from the video you can see the variation in style from person to person, but more about a revival of awareness of personal style. This multi-borough video project, starting out in the Bronx, should change the face of Street Etiquette and everyone involved.

The leather bag made my the brothers of Billy Kirk gives off a sleek masculine look and is a great travel bag to compact items inside but at the same time look comfortable.

“There’s a sense that this return to style, or to a consciousness of how you look, is an attempt by young men to recover a set of values that were at one point very much present in American society and then lost.”

Taken from the New York Times article “Dressing for Success, Again.” This is an article I think everyone should read as it talks about the return of gentlemen into style.

JKISSI : Style, in my opinion can be defined as your body being a blank canvas where you have the choice to make a personal statement to the outside world. There are a number of various parts that accompany your style, such as making your outfits into a body of art by incorporating palettes and textures. There is a distinct difference between style and fashion, which I think people get confused without even knowing so. The majority of our newer readers are probably unaware that I and Travis weren’t always dressed this way. This idea originally stemmed from a previous blog post we posted up about the elements of the “WDYWT” ( What Did You Wear Today ) around individual fashion forums. The thought of myself wearing anything similar to what I wear today four years ago would’ve made me laugh at myself. The important aspect about evolution in style is that it doesn’t occur overnight, it’s more of series of events that happen to you over time. Personally, for me it went from “I could never wear a button up shirt“ to “Ok, I like this , but I could never tuck in my shirt into my pants” and it kept continuing from there. This kind of thought really widens your eyes to different ways of incorporating things you see into your style. It’s often in interviews and general questions people ask “Who am I inspired by? I constantly answer that ordinary people who walk the street with distinctive style inspire me.

Even though my sense of style has changed, there is still multiple stacks of sneaker boxes in my room. I still love sneakers, but as cliche as this sounds I’m not in love with them. I recently did a post titled “Losing My ‘Sole’” which was kind of a farewell to the sneaker game, and everything involved. This post is not relaying the message that everyone needs to alter their style at one point, but it would be a good idea!

I personally feel like so many people could relate to us, and that’s why the site attracts people of all demographics from all over the world. The site has seemed to be on the same parallel as our style, it has changed dramatically from when Travis and I first started. We tried to increase the importance of content and presentation of the site in general , and it seems to be working. Working, something we won’t stop doing definitely more to come the table.

Pictured below are images from us through 2007 – 2009

JKISSI : This post has been a very well waited one with the Summer now here and present. Previously Trav did a post on boat shoes when it came to which popular brand would be better out of two of Sperry and Sebago. I think both companies are taking full advantage by releasing numerous colorways, and collaborating with many brands. It just doesn’t stop there either, the tweaking of the classic deck shoe design has promised some good buys for the Fall and Winter seasons. It seems boat shoes has been the warm weather classic since the 1980s, but recently everyone has their eye on them from high end brands to more casual ones. Whether on ground, or sea worn with socks, or without socks the modern take on the classic boat shoe has gained more momentum than ever. With all of this being said it’s only proper that my own boat shoes hit the deck as well, accompanied by the perfect weather.

It’s typical for me to run around the internet and search for some items I would like to recommend to you guys followed by throwing them on a white canvas. This time around our friends over at Complex depicted a perfect guide for Boat shoes ranging from expensive to more reasonable prices. The versatility boat shoes brings to the table is the reason a lot of people can wear them with different styles from casual to formal. Get into it.

Trav: Today we were fortunate enough to make it to The Pop Up Flea presented by A Continous Lean and Urban Daddy , two very successful sites. There were a couple of very interesting brands at the show. Billy Kirk, 3sixteen, Hattan New York and Gitman Brothers were just some of the few brands in attendance. I didn’t know much about Billy Kirk prior to this event but after gaining some knowledge from the man Kirk himself, I strongly recommend you guys to look into them for some premium leather goods and accessories. It is always a pleasure meeting and conversing with Andrew, one half of the minds behind 3sixteen. Keep an eye out for those Deck Chukkas due to drop very soon. My eyes are open. Gitman Brothers, the Master Shirt Makers had a few impressive pieces on display; they actually just did a collab with h(y)r collective that resulted in some insane oxford shirts. It was a very good event altogether. Stay tuned for upcoming related news.

JKISSI: The overall experience of visiting this event was awesome in its entirety. The minds behind this event Michael Williams and Randy Goldberg selected the perfect location to provide shoppers with such good products from vintage finds to well established brands. It’s simply amazing to see how the influence of the Internet can bring these kinds of events to life. The two discussed on how they were thinking of opening a store together, but settled on the idea of organizing the pop up flea at the end. I would have to agree with them on that decision; the event was well worth it. “This is a menswear goldmine!” stated one guy we met at the Pop Up Flea after stumbling upon the show from walking around the area. There is nothing like discussing a brand with people who are actually apart of the team and process. Talking to the individuals behind some of these brands, and their journey to where they are now just gives us more inspiration and hope for the future. I just want to say it was really a pleasure meeting everyone at this event, and wish we could cover each brand there. If you missed this Pop Flea there is no need to pull out your hair there are talks of it taking place in California, and NYC again in the fall. Stay tuned.

JKISSI : For those that are unaware what the acronyms “BKc” stands for it refers to The Brooklyn Circus. The borough of Brooklyn has become the place to be whether your a student, aspiring artist , or just seeking a new place to call home. There is a first time for everything , and we ultimately decided to change this post up from the others. This is the first post ever where you will receive the perspective of both myself and Trav. The BKc ran by owner Ouigi (The Bearded Man) , and the circus family has been on the forefront of best retail places to visit if you are in New York City. The Brooklyn Circus is no stranger to this site I have been following this brand since 2005 , and I must say the progress they have made still amazes me to this day. We headed over to Brooklyn to take part in their portrait book project shot by well noted photographer John Midgley. The atmosphere was amicable not only does Bkc create fantastic clothing, but they’re also accompanied by a earnest following from Brooklyn to the world. You can ask anyone who lives in Brooklyn, and they should know about the Brooklyn Circus. Experience is truly everything because I had a great time with these guys.

This image below is not apart of the portrait book, it was actually shot with my camera by Ouigi. He came up with the idea to get us on the fire escape sparatically. Risking our lives for that perfect shot!

The man behind the Brooklyn Circus Ouigi Theodore (the bearded man) a guy with a vision that is simply inspiring to all. This time around we had the chance to sit down and discuss far more than the first time.

” The story is set out to unfold through 100 years, we are in no rush for overnight success. This is a process and we are all processing it all, one day at a time.” – Ouigi

Trav: It is truly a site to see so many young brothers sharply presented and doing something positive. There was nothing but inspiration and love being spread throughout the day. The joy you see in the pictures is exactly how the entire day went. The chemistry within the BKc family is incredible, these guys love and live what they do. I find a lot of my my knowledge and inspiration from sources like books, pictures and videos but when a primary source of inspiration is right in front of you, it makes the process that much more astonishing. The fact that these guys came from the urban, sneaker/street wear scene and greatly evolved into what they are now is something we can definitely relate to. We are just on a different page of the same book that is surely to go down in history. What they are doing is something we will surely seek to do on our side of the world.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1502 aligncenter" title="bkcbridge" src="http://streetetiquette.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/bkc.png"

<img class="size-full wp-image-1502 aligncenter" title="bkcbridge" src="http://streetetiquette.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/bkc2.png"

JKISSI : The classic black and white was ideally the original picture of the worlds eye. Black and white photography has always been intriguing to me. In general colored photographs may catch ones eye in terms of highlighting the design, but black and white requires so much more. The saying that every pictures tells a story is true, but when accompanied by black and white photography it gives that particular story some dramatic backdrop. This application on pictures can be misinterpreted, there are very important elements you see reoccur in the best monochromatic photographs. I have to be in the mood to photograph black and white images, it takes much more thinking as I look through the lens at my surroundings. It does not help that my favorite colors are black, white and gray by telling from our website layout it could take you far.

JKISSI : It has been quite some time since we last did a daily snaps edition. The “spring arrives” the title explains it all we are finally past the cold weather. New York City was flooded with people from morning to the late night. With all seriousness and very little exaggeration this past winter felt like it spanned a whole year. Just the simple prediction of a hot weekend had people all over the city hitting the pavement. Finally it’s safe to say throw the gloves, scarves and everything associated with the cold back in your closets. All of these photos were shot on my 1 hour break from Topman that obviously went over a bit lol , creativity cannot be timed.

JKISSI : Yes, revamped guys it’s been a painful month or so without having my camera to shoot around the city. Recently I payed a visit to B&H to purchase a 50 mm 1.8 lens, lens hood, and a cleaning kit. The 50 mm 1.8 is pretty amazing for the price point and the pictures you get out of it without doubt. General use with the 50 mm 1.8 would be perfect for portrait type picture providing you with a nice depth of field. Today I decided to snap some pictures while on my way to work and yes that is Topman/Topshop for the curious. It has been good so far just awaiting the final countdown. Here is my first session with the 50 mm lens and fit for the day.
