Joshua Kissi : Working on the shoes for a little over a year now, our relationship with Soludos was birthed out of a organic post Travis did on Espadrilles [ Summer Etiquette : Espadrilles ] about two years ago, which seems like forever in the Internet age. We started to build a relationship with the great team behind Soludos, which started out based on our respect for each other’s craft.

Now fast forward many months later we have great product to show for it and the opportunity to grow a budding relationship. Each time we have the opportunity to work on product in collaboration with a company, we do not only value the end result, but the process and preparation it takes to get to the final stage.

Inspiration : What’s a summer without espadrilles? We decided to take inspiration from West Indian/Caribbean culture for the material/fabric we used on the espadrilles. It was as simple as it appears we thought it would be great to see that type of texture on a shoe and fortunate for us they came out pretty good. Released in 3 different colors consisting of varsity red, royal blue and olive green these shades seem like the perfect colors for footwear during the warmer months. If anything else here’s a dosage of our summer style while keeping cool in the city.

People : Featuring our good friend/colleague and fellow Bronxite stylist Keino Benjamin joining in on this one. You may have seen him around the ‘interwebs’ taken by many of our favorite street style photographers and has the job of styling a lot of industry clients. You can look out for Keino for his personal work and as we prepare to work on future projects together.

As always we want to thank you guys, the readers who support us on each collaboration and endeavor we take on. Here’s our first installment/package with Soludos (Mesh Net) that we designed to purchase now for $45.00 in order to complete your summer.

Travis Gumbs: Now that the summer is in full swing, we are happy to announce that we are preparing various product releases for the next few months. Back in February we introduced the first pair of shoes from our Del-Toro collaboration. This time around we went with something a bit different to go with the more casual summer months.

We decided to go with a raffia fabric because of its simple look yet versatile attributes. This is the type of shoe that goes with everything from formal to casual and best of all it continuously looks better with time. I decided to wear mine a couple times to show how cool they look once worn in. We will be sure to wear these shoes all summer and give you guys an update on how they are coming along.

The shoes can be purchased at the Del-Toro online shop. They run pretty true to size and are made in Italy with some of the best quality and care possible. Much thanks once again to the guys at Deltoro for a shoe well done!

PURCHASE HERE

Joshua Kissi: Different situations call for different types of shoes. Oxfords, loafers and sneakers are all appropriate depending on the scenario you’re indulging yourself into for the day. Among the assortment of options is the monk strap shoe. Though it hasn’t matched the popularity of the penny or tassel loafer, the monk strap shoe help bring diversification to a footwear collection.

The monk strap shoe is often associated with visuals of a formally sharp-dressed Italian gentleman in a navy pinstripe suit paired with robust lapels and thick pant cuffs atop a pair of chestnut nubuck double monk strap shoes. An important element in many of the currently popular looks in menswear is amalgamating pieces from various styles and tastefully blending them. To illustrate this, I thought it would be beneficial to depict the monk strap shoe in two separate outfits, which is really a first for us on the site.

Visuals: To assemble the visuals, I called up Cleon Grey. Cleon does all of the photography/art direction on his site, AVEDER OUTFIT, which is slowly but steadily redefining the way we look at street style web platforms. With a sharp eye and an even more passionate drive, Cleon looks to create and inspire something we both have in common. Look for us and Cleon Grey to work together on some amazing projects very soon.

Fit Details

Vintage military commander sweater

GAP tweed waistcoat

J.Crew selvedge wheat denim

J.Crew homespun henley

Giorgio Brutuni double monk strap shoe

Filson tote bag

Double monk strap shoes aren’t typically part of my eBay scourges. The great thing about eBay, though, is you can find such shoes from top-tier brands including John Lobb, Edward Green and Crocket & Jones at a fraction of the retail cost.

The price on this particular pair of Giorgio Brutini shoes, featuring the perfect tint of brown, fell under the low double-digit cost. Discrete details, including the pleated leather vamps on the toe box, give the overall shoe a look that I rarely see.

Fit Details

Land’s End puffer vest

Vintage satchel messenger

Giorgio Brutini double monk strap

This is not the first time you’ve seen this bargain of a suit featured on the site. Previously worn during my trip to Berlin, where I paired it with a layered jean jacket and heavy henley, I chose to alter things up a bit this time around. For most gentleman, who view suiting as a part of their lifestyle and an obligation to work, you can only move away so much from the traditional sense of essentials of the suit.

Travis Gumbs: When discussing shoes, the sole of the shoe may very well be the least interesting topic. That’s ironic when you consider that the sole is easily the most important part of a shoe.

With several historic outdoor brands returning to relevancy in the fashion world, shoes featuring a crepe sole have also seen a rise in popularity. The great insulation the crepe sole provides is what makes them so special. Soldiers based in North Africa during WWII wore crepe sole boots as a means for additional protection from the climate. The comfort and light sound the crepe sole creates help separate them from other soles.

Fit Details:

Unlabeled Buffalo plaid hat

Babour quilted jacket

Vintage tweed trousers

Bstore boots

Though I’ve only had this Barbour jacket for a couple of months, it’s already undoubtedly one of my favorite jackets. Quilted olive paired with brown suede is the epitome of classic menswear. Making quality wax and quilted jackets isn’t anything new for Barbour. It’s a craft they’ve been honing for more than a century.

The pants are yet another vintage find. I came across these tweed pants about a year ago. They’ve been in heavy rotation following some extensive tailoring. I love the pleats and high-waisted fit on these.

These BStore crepe sole boots were a sale find at Opening Ceremony. The deep blue almost looks black under certain lighting.

Readers that have been following us for some time now know that we are big fans of the Clark desert boot, arguably the most popular crepe sole shoe of our time. Below is a picture of the very stylish Steve McQueen wearing a pair of crepe soled desert boots.

“Using a process of coagulation creates the crinkled rubber texture of crêpe rubber. This process calls for the combination of coagulated latex with some natural form of coagulum. Often, the nature element used is some type of shell or earth scrap, as well as tree lace. The combined material is ran through large rollers that are known as crepers. Generally, each batch is ran through the crepers several times, allowing the finished product to achieve the density, thickness, and texture that is desired for a particular product…“

Joshua Kissi : This moment has to be one of the most pivotal for myself and Travis, providing our readers with actual tangible products to partake in our extensible journey ahead. We’re constantly inundated with questions pertaining to the start-up of our very own line, but with the self-realization that everything takes time and effort we choose to take gradual steps into the process. For some of our newer readers who haven’t heard of the Nexus Project below is a excerpt from the original post.

A dream for anyone that is a little more “enthusiastic than usual” about style or fashion would be to have their own branded product. While everyone here was stateside experiencing the brutal the winter, I was able to take a trip out to the Dominican Republic along with six influential bloggers to work on a unique opportunity called the Nexus Project. Personally unaware of the amount of strenuous work that goes into designing and selecting certain leathers, it was an experience of a lifetime to happen upon. - excerpt from Original Sebago Nexus Project 06/9/2010

Just in time for transition in seasons from Summer to Fall we present you our shoes with Sebago presented by Ronnie Fieg.

Tassel Moccasin & Lighthouse boot : These two shoes equally give you a sense of fall, with one slightly more minimal than the other. First up is the tassel moccasin, with a splash of color on a classic piece and interesting detail such as red tassels to provide a nice contrast. The Fortissimo of the collection – the lighthouse boot, with its 8 eyelet and classic silhouette, is great for F/W to pair over some nice denim or cords. Both shoes directly speak to different individuals but are cohesive in the design aspect of footwear as being classic go-to items.

The Street Etiquette Tassel Moccasin Shoe retails for $110 and the Lighthouse boot retails for $140. Both are limited in quantity and availability and will be releasing this fall 2010 ( September ) – expect a follow up post

If you thought creating your very own shoes would be an easy task you are highly mistaken; it’s a composite procedure, from materials such as various leathers, nubucks, lace stitches, soles and eyelets, all at your disposal to indulge in. We bombarded the Sebago factory looking to express our stylistic tastes in these shoes, and even though it was challenging, I’m floored by the finish product at hand.

Revolutionizing the concept of street style we teamed up with fellow Nexus Project participant and good friend, director/film maker Jake Davis, to provide additional visuals of the shoes in motion by shooting Travis. We had the pleasure of observing how the process of what may appear simple to us on the outside, comes to fruition from scratch. We first shot with Jake at the capsule trade-show several months ago leaving a notion that we had to recapture the same elements of style, but of course outdoors this time around.

Joshua Kissi: White buckskin shoes, the epitome of summer footwear with their signature red brick sole, have been the All-American shoe since the 1930s. White bucks, as they’re often called, may be as popular as the penny loafer to individuals who are influenced by ivy/trad roots. It’s understood that when it comes to footwear, most gentlemen would like to retain an arsenal of essential footwear to rotate through during the year. Suede bucks definitely need to be in that circle.

Although the majority may favor the crispy white appearance of bucks, I’d rather save the tedious action of cleaning them with suede kits and let them wear in to add a bit of character. Overtly, this notion comes with the casual aspect of my outfit. If the scenario was switched to something like a seersucker or linen suit, I’d advise keeping your shoes as clean as possible. That the shoe would fits certain occasions and outfits depending on whether they’re clean or dirty is evidence of its versatility.

The suede-covered shoe provides its versatility to find a medium between formal and informal. Presently, bucks are seeing a spike in interest for men’s footwear options. Bucks are now produced by many brands in almost every color you can imagine. Last year, I opted for the classic ivory white colorway.

Fit description: I purchased this shirt off of the ever-so-reliable eBay for $9.99. What initially interested me in this item was its opulent plaid colorway that forces you to neutralize the rest of your outfit. It’s interesting that myself and Travis are coming across many vintage Banana Republic pieces from the brand’s previous aesthetic. The corduroy shorts, which were once pants, were cut with garment scissors by myself, ultimately saving money and time from purchasing already-cut shorts. – Just ‘Do It Yourself’

Brief tips

Corduroy pants

Garment Scissors

Pencil/Chalk – to mark your cutting length/make sure both leg inseams are even

We’ve seen numerous brands produce corduroy shorts this summer and even spill over into the fall season — a great look to pair with boots and a heavy shawl sweater of some sort. The African brass bracelet, one of my latest acquisitions in accessories, is directly from Ghana, West Africa

All photographs in this post were taken by the great Rog Walker

Always interesting to see how shoes that people wore decades ago can spout back up to be relevant again. It’s important to find a medium for yourself and buy classic pieces you can wear for years now that most outfits are casually based.

Travis Gumbs: Who said men cant wear slip-ons? During these summer days I’ve opted for a pair of espadrilles undeniably more than any of my many shoes; most of which stay trapped in my closet failing to see this season’s daylight. Perhaps it’s the sheer simplicity that compliments almost any outfit, adding a clean, cool, laid-back feel. There is no question that France and Spain are home to some of the most stylish individuals. With that being said, its easy to see why espadrilles have been quite popular across the pond for some time now. Espadrilles are viewed by many men in the U.S. as “too feminine”, this summer however I’m seeing more and more men harvesting the courage to struct confidently in these badboys.

The espadrille, a canvas sandal with a flexible rope bottom was popularized by the french during the 19th century. This hand crafted shoe was often constructed in the village streets with the alpargateros (espadrille maker) creating the rope sole while the seamstresses sewed the fabric at the bands. Espadrilles are certainly not made to last, they are a preferred shoe by many in the spring and summer months because the sole forms itself to the shape of one’s foot and allows it to breath.

Fit Details: Uniqlo oxford shirt, Save Khaki corduroy shorts, Soludos espadrilles – click for variety.

I choose a pretty basic outfit to display the cool, simple summertime look that is often accommodated by espadrilles. I got my blue/white Soludos espadrilles from Steven Alan at a very reasonable price tag of $28. When buying espadrilles it is very important to size down a full size. The canvas will stretch out quite a bit.

The neckerchief is inspired by Ouigi Theodore (The Bearded Man) of BKc, someone whom one can always turn to for some new stylistic ideas.

Meet Adam Rogers, designer, friend and all out stylish bloke. I especially wanted to feature this London native in this post because he has a knack for implementing his personal style through the simplest of getups. From his T-shirt to his self-made loose fitting shorts, a combination that can easily come across as sloppy and apathetic on others. Its a real skill to wear such a simple outfit and show such a dynamic sense of style. Of course there is much more to his look thats goes deeper than the shirt and pant; his hair, sunglasses, jewelry, bag and of course shoes all work in perfect coherence.
