Trav : As this dreadful NYC winter comes to a much anticipated end, I must highlight one of the pieces that stuck with me and kept my feet warm through this harsh season-the L.L. Bean boot. The good thing about this boot is that it is adaptable to virtually every season. It provides warmth in winter and it is a great spring essential that will surely come in handy for the usual spring showers.
The Bean boot, or “Maine Hunting Shoe”, was created by Leon Leonwood “L.L.” Bean in 1912. The boot was originally designed for hunters and fishermen and has since remained a staple for the L.L. Bean brand. It’s sort of ironic to see this piece that was created for the great outdoors becoming a standard for many city dwellers. I just love bean boots; the comfort, durability and quality of work put into each boot makes the price point unquestionably justifiable in every aspect. These boots are one of those items that different people with different styles can all appreciate. L.L. Bean has a lifetime guarantee, so if at anytime your not happy with your purchase, you have the option of returning it. You can also ship your beans in to be touched up and refurbished for a reasonable fee.
*Side note: I’m actually looking forward to wearing my mocs this spring as well.
Fit details: Coat- thrifted, shirt and scarf- B.R., belt- Tanner Goods, jeans- A.P.C, and of course Bean boots on the feet. Nothing really interesting to talk about except that the coat was an insanely cheap find that I had to get tailored, which then made it a not-so-cheap find. However, I love the way the coat is designed. It has a nice thick collar that stays up when lifted, it fits over the body great and the side pockets are just absolutely genius.
L.L. Bean Signature: Recently L.L. Bean unveiled their new project, L.L. Bean Signature, an extension of their existing brand. This line features items of modern fit and updated style inspired by their archives. I’m really excited to see where this is going. It’s a very smart idea that gives L.L Bean some versatility. I would love to see them really dig into the archives for some of their sweet gems and modernize them. They actually did a waxed canvas Bean boot for this line that came out really nice. The full line releases on March 15th, so get your cards ready.

Once again: Great read. Great fit.
In what way did you get the coat tailored? What did the tailor do, shorten the arms? I have a similar trench from H&M. I couldn’t find one thifting
Email me.

Trav, even though I have not had the luxury of getting my feet in a pair yet I am anxious to definitely feel them out. I am extremely pleased to say that the 8″ high ones that you are wearing in the pictures above are fitting for the fit. I personally would love to have a I have just recently seen where the upper area on the shoe is canvas. I think that the choice of the company to do that was nice. As for the boot it is just a great find and looks to be comparable for any outfit that may come to mind. Anyway, great post brotha’ and keep them coming.
I wasn’t aware that Bean Boots could be refurbished and restored. I need to send mine in before April Showers hit. Thanks for the info.
having grown up wearing bean boots, it’s hard to imagine them stylish … alas: http://tinyurl.com/ykyeh95 (via @streetetiquette)
info on scarf and coat?
I’m feeling the contrast of the green scarf with the burgundy shirt, and I especially love the L.L. Bean boots & trench. BTW, your piece from last month was exceptional!

I feel like I might be the last person to get a pair of Bean boots…seems that everyone around me is rocking them for the very same reasons you are: winter warmth and spring dryness. I think I’ll see if I can cop some…
Really like the color palette here once again. Also, like the change of scenery. It’s nice to switch it up occasionally.
Great post as always, have been looking forward to a post on boots. I think the LL Beans are very practical, but, aesthetically they’re not my cup of tea. That coat is gorgeous, what a find! Any info on the fabric, is it a blend? I’m looking for a warm coat of similar colour, one like that would be fantastic.
Nicely coordinated AND warm!
i love the beans man… i actually have the 10` ones that i wore throughout the winter time. I plan on getting the 6` pretty soon for those rainy days in the spring and summer time. TO me the bring a more versatile style when it comes to boots b/c its not your stereotypical Ugg boot or Timbaland. Good job as always… shoutout to SE i plan on meet ya soon man
I don’t live an outdoor lifestyle. I just wouldn’t feel genuine in a pair of Bean boots.
Great post! The Bean boot is a classic, an all-weather essential, no closet should be without!

What would you wear/pair with the mocs? I am VERY curious to know. Also, can you do a post on jeans for men and give options other than SKINNY JEANS…as mucular/atheletic guys cannot wear them…but still like to look stylish. By the way, I just find out about the blog and it’s the real deal. Finally Fashion for brothers….fashion that I can relate too. That’s what’s up. You guys have a new number 1 fan.
Be sure to give ideas for the mocs.
I was waiting to see how you’d top the last post. Not bad. I like how you always bring a historical/vintage aspect to each topic.
good post, winter fashion is almost at an end for the season, and this post came just in time i thought you guys weren’t going to make anymore updates for the year after sewn for the soul
I’d like to see how you’d style a spring look with the mocs. I wanna get a pair but it gets sooo hot here in spring (Texas).
I honestly don’t know what I would have done without my all brown bean boots this winter. I can safely say I’ll probably keep a pair around for the rest of my life. They are superb on all levels and you pulled them off great with that fit Trav.

I love that you did a post about these boots! I love the contrast between the wellie like bottom (which reminds me of a duck for some reason) and the leather top. Oh and the laces lol
Great jacket, pockets and the buttons look great.
What can I say I’m a sucker for detail, great post.
duckboots = classics.
im not surprised u posted LLBean good classic brand most sleep on nowadays.
lands end is another. i was discussing this w/ josh the other day…
good post like always bro.
check out mines and lemme know wat u think.
For some reason, maybe its a English thing, I’m not feeling these boots at all, the only place you ever see them on sale over here is in crappy Millets camping stores, and no way the same quality as the ones in the thread.
Rest of the outfit is great (as ever) I’d just slap on a pair of Timb’s instead.
I’m interested to know how the coat was tailored too.
Contemplating 16″ Maine Hunting Shoes with a sun dress…
You young sirs are always on point with your fits. I can see how the sneaker game influenced your style, you guys always seem to anchor attention to your boots/shoes/sneakers without completely overstating the whole fit. Keep up the inspiration.
Are your apc new cures or petite standards?
Definently feelin’ the bean boots…do they come in any other colors?
Straight win always http://streetetiquette.com/2010/03/09/all-season-etiquette-the-bean-boot/
Love those boots, especially with your fit!
Wish they could make a more feminine version!
P.S: Likin the do! lol

S: Thanks.. I had the the body of the coat slimmed down. That was about it. Coast me $40
David A.: Thanks a lot man..yup the canvas upper ones are real nice.. they are part of the L.L. Bean signature line..
ByronLinnell: Yea man.. I dont know how much they charge to resole and what not but its definitely a good thing, this way you get to really age with your bean boots. They look excellent when really worn in.
TayZonday: coat is a thifted item and the scarf is Banana Republic
DC: thanks man.. glad you like Sewn From the Soul.
sssence: Thanks… honestly, i think virtually anyone can pull of bean boots just based on the fact that they have practicality..If its raining you throw them on and they really seem to go with basically any style. Glad you like the change of scenery, we’re trying to switch it up to places that fit each post from now on.
Tim: Thanks man, the coat is like a heavy wool and honestly a coat like this is really not hard to find in say a thrift store or on eBay, this was a very popular style years ago.
LynnDanielleTreasure: Thank you
Neef : I would love to meet you man…, and yea yoou are so right they arent like traditional boots so the boundaries are less abundant.
MinoruBlvd: haha i hear you man. from what im seeing though, its being accepted as a city item for those bad days of weather.
Anastasia S.: Thanks.. You said it!
Mcobb: Thanks a lot, i did a post wearing the mocs not too long ago. I’ll be sure to post wearing them again real soon. Thanks for the love!
EC: lol thanks a lot man, i don’t expect on topping last months post just yet, but stay tuned we have big things planned!
joseph a: hahah, we had to let Sewn From The Soul sink in a pit but now we are back on schedule. Thanks for the love.
ericdwills: We will definitely do a post wearing the mocs real soon, seeing that we both have a pair. It doesn’t really matter how hot it gets, if its raining they will still definitely come in handy.
Matt Morris: Thanks a lot for the love man. Yea these boots literally saved me this winter with all this snow we saw in NYC this season..I unfortunately had to neglect all my other boots.
Natalie: Thanks!…I’m also a sucker for detail. Glad you like it!
TomO: Thaks. Yea you are so right Land End is definitely also slept on. Real nice clean blog you have… real clean!
Brighton Peer: haha i hear you man.. sometimes items like these vary in terms of liking. I know when i was growing up, we wouldn’t even step out the house in duck boots unless there was a snow storm outside.
goldie: I had the body taken in. It was real blown out prior to the tailoring. You should definitely do the 16″ with the sundress. I think that’s sooo dope on a girl!
mustbefire: Thanks, man are a good observer.. That’s exactly how it is, you even put it into words better than i could.
Chris: Petit Standards
J. Carter: Well they come in tan/brown and the new waxed canvas/brown.. I really hope they start making more colors the ones in their archives. They use to have tan/navy one for men but they discontinued that and now that colorway is only available for woman. sucks.
LOLA: Thanks a lot. you always comment and show mucho love!

I love LL Bean boots, and have had my eye on a pair for a while.
@Lola – they come in women’s sizes and look great on females as well!
Good stuff Trav
Those boots are epic
great post! so glad we stumbled upon your blog!
love the boots they look extra comfortable and warm.
also the coat looks great on you!
cant wait for the warm weather either.
Solid post. Appealing footwear but no need for bean boots during the Miami winter season I experience.
The coat is really sweet, i like the details like the western flaps over the bottom pockets, the big sturdy collar, and the flaps over the shoulders. I’ve never really liked duck boots because they’re generally big and clunky, but after seeing you post with the ll bean mocs, they’ve kinda grown on me, and the chain tread for the soles are more aesthetically appealing and set ll bean boots apart from the rest.
One more thing trav, when it comes to tailoring a shirt or coat, is it simply a manner of adjusting where its sewn? If so, where on a shirt can I determine whether or not its sleeves can be taken out to a longer length?
Apparently, when I bought some corduroy shirts they weren’t at their final size. After washed, they lost about 2-3 inches about the cuff!
Apparently I didn’t read the post carefully, but first that blazer and now this coat, what kind of thrift shops do you go to?
All Season Ettiquette: The Bean Boot http://streetetiquette.com/2010/03/09/all-season-etiquette-the-bean-boot/
Great post here fellas again you do this too flawlessly your fit and text brings everything together!
Wow , petite standards look great here the think I love about them they’re not too slim or too baggy just right in my opinion.
Excellent boots! and LOLA they do make them for womens and look just as good when men wear them my husband have been wearing them for years
The boots are nice but I got my eye on that coat. You can definitely use boots in England anytime…

Trav great post man…feel kind of lame not owning a pair now lol
i appreciate your style…not that I’m anyone of importance.
Kasey : You don’t have to be someone of importance to appreciate style I’m sure Travis and Joshua will tell you that also. That’s one of the great reasons this site is successful there’s no superiority in their post and response more like friends you know around the way that are very stylish lol
Those Boots are Crazy with the scarf. The colors go so good with each other.
McCobb : You can basically find non-skinny jeans at most places lol it’s not a hard thing to discover. How about APC New Standards those are pretty loose on the legs
Trav, love the fit and the post. How did you size on the boots by the way? Compared to your regular shoe (not sneaker) size?
Swell post brother. Respect, keep it up cause this site is pretty awesome. I’ve been looking a pair of these local style but no luck. How’s the fit on em?
Sorry this is off topic, but i was wondering, for your wine colored jeans in the duffle coat post, i could only find regular fit online, are they regular fit or are they skinny and only available in-store? I’ve been looking for a pair for a while and when i saw them on the online uniqlo store for like $20 i was excited but they were regular fit and not skinny or slim..
Definitely love the mocs I have received brown/brown btw been wearing them a little bit too much but we had a great reason with 3 days of rain continuously.
Percy : The fit is different you would have to size down a whole size to get your correct size definitely. Let’s say For example If you wear a 10 D in most of your shoes you would get a 8 or 9 D to get your foot perfectly.
Great boots, they look just the thing for days when the weather is less than great. I think they work really well with the denim – I like the fact your turn-ups (Do Americans call it ‘cuffing’?) aren’t precise – they’ve got a real “I just threw them on but they still look great” thing going on.
Great use of colour through the rest of the look, I really like the way your scarf contrasts against the shirt.
Happy to see this blog and to be a part of it. The Bean boots are a must have. I wore mine this NYC winter. Want to get the new canvas ones. Trav, I live in NYC and am looking for a good men’s tailor. Any suggestions?
These are some great shots
That coat looks amazing on you Trav.
I might pick up that scarf, depending on the weather
hey trav i just got my apc’s tailored (waist and tapered leg) like you did because they stretched out like crazy. I was wondering if yours stretched even more after the tailoring because Pablo at stanton made them really tight haha.
how do such practical things look so sassy? it’s almost a rule. these boots look so good. i’ve been wanting a pair.
my other question is- why are men dressing better than women these days?! i swear it’s the truth. and it’s fine by me. though all i want to wear still is menswear.
I haven’t read all the comments, sorry if you’ve addressed this already…How do you walk in the Bean boots with them tied so loose?
Were the APCs tailored? The selvedge looks a little wider … I’d been wondering if there was a way to bring mine in without loosing it.
All Season Etiquette: The Bean Boot – http://streetetiquette.com/2010/03/09/all-season-etiquette-the-bean-boot/
I know this is late, but which bean boot height are you wearing in this photo, the 8′ inch right?
