Etiquette on the Street
JKISSI : It simply amazes me how photos are captured of ordinary stylish people on the streets from all around the world. The Internet is a amazing source fueling photographers to take pictures of people who are “fashionable”. I use the word “fashionable” wisely because to a individual stylish and fashionable can only be labeled from the person viewing another. You see varying styles from different people which you yourself may not be able to pull off, but simply appreciate it. Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) has inspired a lot of people with fashion blogs to do what he has made popular, and that is capturing the way people dressed that caught the naked eye. He explains his philosophy here ” I thought I could shoot people on the street the way designers looked at people, and get and give inspiration to lots of people in the process. My only strategy when I began The Sartorialist was to try and shoot style in a way that I knew most designers hunted for inspiration”. You can recognize Scott Schuman’s pictures from a photography standpoint quite easily. The focused subject, low aperture background which blurs the background, and last but not least the person who expresses themselves in the photos are all involved. I have to say from viewing pictures and people from all around the world I’m always amazed by the city of Stockholm. I definitely have to book my ticket to Sweden in the near future. My own story ensues on my way to work as I took the back streets of Crosby St. to avoid the busy Broadway traffic, I ran into a photographer. He wanted to take my picture and I was already late for work, but of course I agreed to make it happen. If I remember correctly he shot with a Nikon D80 accompanied by a 50 mm 1.8 lens. The important thing of shooting people you don’t know is making sure they are at a level of comfortability as you snap your pictures. Deciding on a location we talked about style, and fashion a quick way to connect with people. His name is Guerre and his site is located here where you could see other photos of stylish individuals. We shot the photos quickly and were stopped by tourist because one girl swore up and down she had seen me model before somewhere. I didn’t want her hopes to be up, so how could I disagree.

Just found this site off of NikeTalk and I must say nothing short of Impressive there are millions of fashion blogs out there for men, but nothing like this. Keep up the good work fellas and dope outfit down there man sick.

i think street style has really exploded because people can relate to it a lot more than the runway and editorial, it’s more interesting to see how people apply trends/fashion into their real lives.

Dope man loving this , The Sartorialist has started what I call the internet fashion age in my opinion it has helped us regular people become intertwined with eachother more easily. Trends are from all over it really amaes me I really like what Pretaporter said , i agree! , and oh yeah nice outfit
nice man! I’m really in tune with photography now and I’m especially pleased I got an award for it at school. I’m a little more confident in my abilities mow and shooting in the streets will be my next task.

, Mikec im pretty sure he uses a Canon Rebel XTI the same camera I have with a 50 mm 1.8 lens they did post on this previously. I’m sure he will come ot clear it up.
When I saw that last picture of the black brother on The Sartorialist last summer…It inspired my style completely

Pret pretty much summed it up… Pictures of real people on the street are sooo effective. I feel like they generate a bit of emotion of you.. Hell they even remind me to keep my eyes open when i’m stomping through Soho or something…

Nice post once again my friends. Mr. Schuman does always a nice job on captuering the peeps on the street. Just much more real than anything on the fashion shows. What I like the most is that you’re able to see what people from all over the world are wearing. just beautiful.

street fashion is simply amazing..
it always has the power to pull people in.
it can inspire, teach , and totally change people’s perspective on style (did it for myself)
the fact that it’s real people with real style
makes it totally priceless, and amazing, i’m proudly into street fashion myself
this is why i can appreciate this and many other blogs that include it.
i was actually in the process of starting my own street fashion blog myself.
but things and ideas changed, and i totally lost the motivation, but i have something in my opinion a little better.

Pretaporter, Thats a interesting point right there and I agree with you Street is something more people could surely relate to. The Editorials & Runways are sometimes too far fetched for some people to connect with, even though I can perfectly see the inspiration in Editorials and Runway. Very very good point.
Steve, thanks man yeah the Sartoralist the site inspirec countless people to either do what he was doing , but alter it a bit. What I really love is how he captures them in their best moments it looks similar to a ad when theyre just ordinary people.

Squincy , probably one of my favorite people to read comments from man you always offer a lot to read and definitely appreciate that. I’m a talker myself so when I see you took out the time to put out your point of view on things I have to read lol. You hit it right on the head about street fashion man its easy to take in I simply love it man. The people aren’t dressed by stylist or designers these are people just expressing themselves through clothes , which is always pretty interesting. If you want to do something make sure yo ureally want to do it first man and come out with motivation to just get what you want man. A lot of people doubted this site in its early stages , but me and Trav stayed true to what we believe and continued to do what we could do to make it better , and even more to come. Your right though about jacket the back of it is especially dope man he took very detailed pictures of the outfit so you cant see it there pictured. Man if its a good deal pull the trigger its definitely worth it.
Kadeem , I agree me and Trav laughed at the picture for a little bit at first then we had to recognize how well dressed he was. The confidence is on point in that picture he was featured in Hickey Style’s F/W 09 lookbook was very good look. I hear he is a fashion editor , but I have no clue where he is based.

I almost love your blog. The photos are great and you two are really beautiful and have a great sense of style. It’s unfortunate that there are s many grammatical and spelling errors. C’mon young brothas, go the extra mile. At least have someone do a proof read before you put stuff out. I know this isn’t a money-making venture but be warned, if you want to be as big as Sart, you’re going to have to put out much more professional copy. Take a class in writing, that may help.

Squincy, I hear you man sometimes you have to just go out on your route and do it yourself. Depending on people can be the worst sometimes your the one that control your future. We had a situation like that before recently and we’re going to blog about it.

JungleSiren, I love how you said “almost” love our blog I’m like what.. how can a person “almost”love something, but I read the rest of your comment. I could do nothing , but agree with you here. We are trying to venture out and be as big as “insert name here”. I see your not throwing up your comment fueled with hate or anything I see it as really good constructive criticism, and its never bad to hear that. All we get is nice compliments via email,twitter,facebook , but I really take your kind of comments to heart though. It’s a challenge for a lot of people with fashion blogs to type up some stuff with content like we do, so they take the easy route of just pictures of outfits. I’m not saying that to bash anyone at all just reality it seems, but we will be more considerate. Thanks for the comment please come again to the site.

I will be back. I really dig it. I’ve been looking for something like this, with a slight lean toward ethnicity (i.e. afro/amer) that isn’t cheesy or specifically hip hop. You guys hit the nail on the head. The pictures are excellent and the style is wonderful. I see the potential for greatness here.

Seems like the Nikons are taking over the photog world. Id cop 1 if they we’re so expensive. Anyways Im not the least bit surprised that the first set of pics were taken overseas. Those different cultrues see fashion at a whole different angle. I’ve lived both here in the states and overseas being blessed with the capability of seeing both angles. I mean even here stateside growing up I witnessed the different views we carry region to region. We have so many different sources to pull inspiration its not even funny.
Good stuff dude. It’s a possibility that you have a calling for modeling then maybe? Many people get pulled off the streets of NY and find themselves supermodels a year or 2 later.
Genuinely happy with what you are doing with this blog. I don’t read through any blogs except this one and and my own – and I’m not even big on fashion. Keep it up 1
