Etiquette on the Street

JKISSI :  It simply amazes me how photos are captured of ordinary stylish people on the streets from all around the world. The Internet is a amazing source fueling photographers to take pictures of people who are “fashionable”. I use the word “fashionable” wisely because to a individual  stylish and fashionable can only be labeled  from the person viewing another.  You see varying styles from different people which you yourself may not be able to pull off, but simply appreciate it. Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) has inspired a lot of people with fashion blogs to do what he has made popular,  and that is capturing the way people dressed that caught the naked eye.  He explains his philosophy here ” I thought I could shoot people on the street the way designers looked at people, and get and give inspiration to lots of people in the process. My only strategy when I began The Sartorialist was to try and shoot style in a way that I knew most designers hunted for inspiration”. You can recognize Scott Schuman’s pictures from a photography standpoint quite easily. The focused subject, low aperture background which blurs the background, and last but not least  the person who expresses themselves in the photos are all involved. I have to say from viewing pictures and people from all around the world I’m always  amazed by the city of Stockholm. I definitely have to book my ticket to Sweden in the near future.  If you are interested in seeing more fashion from around the world, (just to name a few) check out Jak & Jil, and Style Sightings.

My own story ensues on my way to work as I took the back streets of Crosby St. to avoid the busy Broadway traffic, I ran into a photographer. He wanted to take my picture and I was already late for work, but of course I agreed to make it happen. If I remember correctly he shot with a Nikon D80 accompanied by a 50 mm 1.8 lens. The important thing of shooting people you don’t know is making sure they are at a level of comfortability as you snap your pictures. Deciding on a location we talked about style, and fashion a quick way to connect with people. His name is Guerre and his site is located here where you could see other photos of stylish individuals. We shot the photos quickly and were stopped by tourist because one girl swore up and down she had seen  me model before somewhere.  I didn’t want her hopes to be up, so how could I disagree.

Then & Now: Clarks Desert Boots

May 25th, 2009 Posted in General Style 38 Comments

Trav: If you pay even the slightest attention to Josh and I’s recent fit pics, you may notice the constant reassurance of the Clarks Desert Boot. They are just such a versatile piece of footwear that can be mixed and match with many styles for that real clean, classically casual look. A  couple months ago I came across an Ebay listing that showed some very unique, red Clarks desert boots IN MY SIZE. The seller was from Australia and apparently he was getting rid of his ginormous shoe collection. The desert boots were listed as near dead stock condition (worn twice) and released sometime between 20 and 30 years ago. Needless to say, I got them and love them but I have noticed a couple of considerable differences that might as well make  these a completely different shoe when compared to the current Clarks desert boot. Firstly, I’ve notice that the older pair was made in Australia while the current pair is made in Vietnam. I don’t know if Clarks has different manufacturers, I assume that production was once done in Australia but later moved to Vietnam. The laces are also different, the older pair has nice round solid laces that are soooo much more practical than the annoying, flat, stringy laces in the current pairs. The actual feel between the two shoes is completely different, the most recent pairs are more soft and smooth than the vintage pair’s harder, more rough suede. The fit is also a lot different, the older pair feel a lot better, they are wider with much better heel support.I remember an old school Jamaican guy talking about how Clarks were not made the same anymore and how they started sacrificing  quality for cheaper cost. I can now say that i see what he was talking about. I wish they were made how they were in the past. I am still however a fan of the current models.

Etiquette Read : It’s All Good

May 24th, 2009 Posted in Etiquette Read 16 Comments

JKISSI : I will admit I’m not the most avid book reader, but when I do come across books that grab my attention I try to spread the word, after all who doesn’t appreciate a good read. This site is more than just a “fashion” blog we actually try to provide anything interesting involving our lives to you guys much more like a intimate connection. A special thanks to my friend Eno a fellow photographer who let me borrow his own copy for me to put my head in. The book is mainly a photography book breaking away from your average traditional set of literature.  Once I opened up the book there was no stopping me from flipping from page to page. This book is one of the books where you have to mentally prepare yourself to read. Captured in New York City ( Brooklyn & Queens ) the pictures brought chills to my body depicting the grim gritty reality of  the lowest place you can possibly go in my opinion under the ‘hood’. It’s  not like I haven’t seen sample pictures from the book, but it is mostly the narrations  before the images that lure you into the world of the pictures that follow. Boogie did what most photographers aren’t able to do and that is be trusted enough to be let in the neighborhoods of the people depicted in the photos. The stories  of addiction to drugs and gang banging are told by the individuals themselves from their beginnings to current status. Growing up amongst a similar environment especially really reveals your eyes to some things.  People always say pictures can communicate a story to you, and that’s exactly the feeling you get from this book. Each and every picture posses its own tone that you can get from the image, the interpretation is really up to you. The black and white color scheme always seem to turn an already fantastic picture to a classic picture now adding some dramatic backdrop into the image now. As a aspiring photographer myself you become inspired by the time your finished reading the book, and viewing the pictures. It grabbed the attention of a guy sitting directly next to me he was amazed at the images and asked if they were ‘real’ pictures. He asked for the title and author of the book, and I was happy to let him know.  You can purchase it here if you want , always a good choice for personal collections.
